Varicose vein disease prevalence is 20 to 25% in adult population in Goa. It occurs when the walls of veins weaken. As blood pressure in vein increases, the weakened walls allow vein to get bigger. As vein stretches, the valves that keep blood moving in one direction in vein can’t work like they should. Sluggish blood backs up or pools in vein, causing vein to swell, bulge and twist. It usually occurs in person who are in long standing profession like bus conductor, teacher, chef, surgeons etc. and also have hereditary syndrome.
Patient can present with itching, pain, aching, lower extremity heaviness, muscle cramps, ankle swelling, discoloration, lipodermatosclerosis, and ulcerations. Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) is cutting edge technology in which we make 2 mm hole in vein below the knee joint and with the help of laser fiber we burn the vein at 120 degree temperature.
Laser ablation is day care procedure/ 1 day admission required, patient can walk after 2 hours of procedure and very less painful compare to the invasive surgery. Patient can start working from next day.
Above facility is already started and patients can visit Department of Interventional Radiology at Goa Medical College for appointments.
